For my design degree project in Spring 2024, I wanted to combine my love of type design and typography with my years of experience sewing and crafting. I did this by creating my own typeface, Bobbin, with two different styles: one that can be used as a practical sewing pattern and one that is designed as a display type.
Additionally, I created a series of type specimens to show the typeface in use. These are a combination of digital specimens and one large-scale physical specimen in the form of a quilt, which I designed and constructed.
Much of my work on this project was in researching how textile art can interact with design, and how many modern artists are using textiles as a feminist reclamation of a typically disregarded art form, often relegated to being craft rather than art. This specifically feminine frustration and disrespect ultimately fueled this project for me, which greatly informed my decisions regarding color, copy, and form.
Here you will find my digital type specimens and photos of my quilt, affectionately titled "Why can't you tell me that I'm good at this?", and at the bottom of the page you can download my process PDF to get a more in-depth idea of this project from beginning to end.
